O Captain My Captain
by Jamie Cavanagh

I am the captain of my ship,
Not cargo in the hold
Nor crewman bartered
Bought and sold
Sailing some foretold direction.
And though subject to the vagaries
Of solar wind and universal seas
Am slave to naught but destiny.
I choose my ports among the ports
Which present themselves to me.
Yes, I am captain, plot my course,
Follow stars I choose.
I sail alone through galaxies
No need for worried crews.
I am captain, wanderer,
I sail a thousand skies.
And if my ship should founder,
So shall I.
