Earthquakes and Volcanoes
by Joanne Tolson

Earth rebels and quakes, parting its rifts
Like angry lips, thrusting, sucking in and out
and pulling on the continental plates,
jumbling up the layers of evolution, or creation of life
calderas of molten rock and gases, rivers of fire
causing heaving and shaking, earth-cleansing fire.
White-hot sulfuric pumice ash rains down.
The earth shakes like a rocket on takeoff
as the tectonic plates shudder as they push
against one another, resisting the advances
of each other. The tectonic plates make waves
sometimes across the ocean causing tsunamis
wash houses out to sea like wooden toy blocks
bobbing up and down in the water.
